Last year I was named the 2016 School Library Journal’s School Librarian of the Year. It was one of the proudest moments of my teaching career. One of the incredible components of the award was $2,500 to spend at the Scholastic Book Store. I am fortunate to work in a district that believes in and supports my mission as a school librarian. My library is well-funded and properly staffed. Because of this, I wanted to do something different with the Scholastic funds. I’ve decided that I will donate them to five schools in need; each school will be awarded $500.
Do you know a school who’s library could use these funds?
The most democratic way I could come up for distributing these funds is to create a Rafflecopter page. Here’s how it works: if you tweet about the contest and/or leave a comment on the blog, you will receive an ‘entry’ in the raffle. On March 1st the Rafflecopter ‘engine’ will randomly choose five lucky recipients. The more entries you have, the better your chances. So, go ahead and submit an entry on behalf of your school or a deserving school you know about. Click the link below to enter the raffle! Share with as many folks as you can and I can’t wait to see how this turns out! Good luck!
Such a generous idea! I know our dual language school would appreciate this gift, and our own wonderful librarian could lend her expertise in choosing books. Thanks for the chance!

Our school is a Elementary Title I School. We do have a budget to purchase books, but our students are budding readers and need that bonus set of books for book clubs in the Library or in the classroom. Your generous offer would provide that and more!

Sparkman Library could use this to purchase books or makerspace materials! We are a low income very rural school with a small budget. I am a K-12 LMS trying my best to make a difference in the lives of our students.

Thank you for your generosity! I am the librarian at Zapata Academy, a K-8 Chicago Public School. With continued cuts to our school budget, funds aren’t available to support our school library. Our students would greatly benefit from the $500 to add high demand titles to our library collection.

$500 would be such a boost! I work in a parochial PreK-gr. 8 school library; the school can only pay for me to work 3 days a week, and there’s no book budget at all. I run 2 Scholastic book fairs each school year to raise funds to purchase books. I’m trying to update the nonfiction – science & technology to support our STEM curriculum and our Robotics team, and countries & states (the sets we have are 25-30 years old). Some extra money would help me pick up some newer, better titles to support the reports our students need to write.

You are so generous, sharing your wealth with the less fortunate; thank you for the opportunity! We are a high school (the first African-American high school in Portsmouth, VA by the way) who has not gotten any money from our school in 5 years. We lost our library clerk due to retirement in December and there has been a hiring freeze, so we can’t replace her until next year. We would love to have $500 in new books from Scholastic as we are trying to continually update our library. Thank you for your consideration.
