On Halloween NightOn Halloween Night by Ferida Wolff

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was hoping this book would be a bit ‘scarier,’ but the first graders I read it with sure liked it.

Of course, they liked the pattern of the rhyme and the counting up, but what they really loved was being my chorus of ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhssssss! After each page, the text ends with a spooky oooooh. The kids loved me pointing to them and creating their scariest oooh, but I loved directing their volume and length with my ‘conductor’ skills.

We used this book to wrap up our pumpkin painting activity. I was impressed when one student noted, “The children are in almost every single illustration.” This sent us back to the beginning to scour each page with our eyes hunting the two children. She was right! This made for several lessons that had us all laughing and enjoying the book and we weren’t the least bit scared. And that was just fine!
